11 Educators Explored “Nature as a Fantastic Classroom” in Sweden

This summer, a group of 11 enthusiastic educators embarked on an inspiring Erasmus+ project in Sweden under the theme “Nature as a Fantastic Classroom.” The program brought together teachers and education professionals from various European countries, who share a common vision: to discover innovative ways of teaching and learning through direct engagement with the natural environment.

Learning Beyond the Walls

Hosted in Sweden—renowned for its rich landscapes, outdoor culture, and sustainable lifestyle—the project offered participants a unique opportunity to experience how nature can be transformed into an active learning space. The educators explored forests, lakes, schools and outdoor classrooms while learning practical strategies for integrating outdoor education into their own teaching practice.

Workshops and field activities highlighted topics such as:

  • Using outdoor settings to encourage creativity and curiosity.

  • Promoting environmental awareness and sustainability in schools.

  • Developing teamwork and problem-solving skills through nature-based tasks.

  • Fostering well-being and mindfulness by connecting with the natural world.

A European Exchange of Ideas

The project was also a celebration of cultural exchange. The group collaborated with Swedish educators and experienced how outdoor learning is embedded in the local education system. Sharing ideas and practices across borders allowed the participants to broaden their perspectives, strengthen international cooperation, and build long-lasting professional networks.

Bringing the Experience Home

The 11 educators returned with fresh ideas, new methodologies, and renewed enthusiasm for creating enriching learning environments. They are now working to adapt and share their experiences within their schools and communities, ensuring that more students benefit from the project’s outcomes.

This Erasmus+ journey was not only a professional development opportunity, but also a reminder of the powerful role that nature plays in education. By stepping outside the classroom walls, the project showed that every forest path, every tree, every town and every village, every open sky can inspire curiosity, discovery, and growth.
